Musical Alphabet Song

Here’s a little song to go along with the intro to the Musical Alphabet.

In the early 2000s, I co-taught a local guitar course for the non-profit organization Guitars In The Classroom. Instead of teaching students, we taught K-6 school teachers along with Headstart and preschool teachers. We taught them some basics of playing guitar chords and leading songs. The purpose was to bring some music into classrooms, especially in light of school budget cuts that affected music programs.

Given that we were teaching simple guitar chord accompaniment for children’s songs, one of the songs in the repertoire for the teachers was “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. The melody for that song is the same as the classic ABC Song from A through Z (“Now I said my ABCs, tell me what you think of me”).

Based on this melody and lyrics, I wrote a variation of the Alphabet Song (ABCs) adapted for use in learning the Musical Alphabet. You can sing these three verses below using same melody as “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” and “ABC Song”.

Musical Alphabet Song

new lyrics by Ron Pulcer

A B C D E F G,
A B C D E F G;
When you get to letter G,
Back to A and then repeat:
A B C D E F G,
Singing, strumming, A through G.

These are notes in the Key of C:
A B C D E F G;
White keys on the piano,
A through G notes, now you know!
Black keys are called sharps and flats.
Extra notes, imagine that!

A B C D E F G,
A B C D E F G;
Seven letters, seven notes,
Ants, bears, cats, dogs, eels, frogs, goats
A B C D E F G,
Singing, strumming, A through G.
